Everything you need to know about the notes you wear
Fragrances, like music, are made up of different notes. All perfume connoisseurs must familiarise themselves with them. As perfume experts, Luxury Concepts has always been in the business of creating scents that make you happy. With this guide, you should be able to understand the various fragrance notes to help you choose the right perfume for you.
A final fragrance comprises different layers and is specifically divided into three distinct rudiments – top notes, middle notes or heart notes, and base notes. Only when these three foundational elements come together can we beget a beautiful fragrance. Without these, perfumes would seldom be appealing.
Also known as headnotes or opening notes, these fragrances are recognised the moment the perfume is spritzed. These are also the lightest of all and the first to fade away. But that does not mean they are unimportant. They are necessary to make that immediate first impression. While these are not long-lasting, it is also the first smell of the new fragrance which lures you in. Top notes are typically made up of citrus, light fruits and fresh herbs.
Heart notes are essentially the heart of the entire fragrance. This layer makes up at least 40% to 80% of the final. These just cannot be ignored. Just as the top notes fade away, the heart notes begin to take control – that is why the middle notes have to be pleasant. Some of the most recognisable heart notes come from rose, cinnamon and lemongrass.
Once the top notes have evaporated completely, the base notes begin to figure. 10% to 25% of the final fragrance is made up of base notes. These combine with the heart notes to deepen the perfume’s complexity and drive the impression further. Like how top notes make the initial impression, base notes represent the final lasting impression. Rich and smooth base notes constantly to ensure the long life of the scent. The most common are vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood, cedarwood and musk.
